Christians have called this land home for two thousand years.

The Holy Land is the birthplace of Christianity. For two millennia, Christian communities have lived, worshipped, and built their lives in Gaza, Bethlehem, Beit Sahour, Taybeh, and Birzeit — towns where the story of the faith began. At its peak in the early twentieth century, Christians made up nearly twenty percent of the population of historic Palestine.

The communities

Bethlehem, Beit Sahour, Taybeh, and Birzeit in the West Bank are home to some of the oldest continuously inhabited Christian communities on earth. Their churches, schools, and hospitals have served their neighbors — Christian and Muslim alike — for generations.

The slow erosion

Over decades, emigration driven by conflict, economic hardship, and political instability has steadily reduced the Holy Land’s Christian population. By 2023 Christians represented less than two percent of the population across the Palestinian territories — a fragile, ancient presence under mounting pressure.

Gaza's Christian community, while never large, had nonetheless endured for centuries. The Holy Family Church in Gaza City — one of the oldest active churches in the world — remained a place of refuge and worship even as the territory around it changed hands and suffered repeated cycles of conflict.

These are not statistics. They are families who have prayed in the same churches their ancestors built, in the same streets where the first disciples walked.

October 7 changed everything. For everyone.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a devastating attack on southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostage. Israel's military response in Gaza followed — one of the most intense urban military campaigns in modern history. By May 2026 more than 52,000 Palestinians had been killed, approximately one third of them children.

The toll on civilians

17,000 children orphaned. 96% of children in Gaza living in constant fear. Over 22,000 children injured — Gaza now has the world's highest number of child amputees, many the result of explosive weapons in densely populated areas.

The Christian community

Gaza's approximately 1,000 remaining Christians — the vast majority sheltering at the Holy Family Church compound — faced the same devastation as their Muslim neighbors. Cut off from food, medicine, and any safe exit, they endured months of bombardment with no international protection and no evacuation corridor.

In the West Bank, the conflict accelerated a different kind of crisis — rising settler violence and expansion, movement restrictions, and economic collapse pushed Christian families toward emigration at a faster rate than at any point in living memory.

The war continues. So does VPP.

While ceasefires have come and gone, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza has not ended. Food, medicine, and basic supplies remain critically scarce. The nearly 1,000 Christians sheltering at the Holy Family Church compound depend on external partners to survive. In the West Bank, Christian communities face a different but equally urgent threat — displacement and erasure through attrition.

Programs

Food delivery: VPP has partnered to deliver food directly to Gaza's remaining Christians. One fully stocked truck costs $30,000 and reaches approximately 1,000 people — roughly $30 per person per month. In a war zone where supply chains are nonexistent and roads are destroyed, getting a truck through is itself an act of solidarity.

Prosthetic limbs for child amputees: VPP has partnered with Bethlehem Arab Society Hospital to provide 3D-printed prosthetic limbs for child amputees in Gaza and the West Bank. The goal is 400 children receiving prosthetics — restoring mobility, dignity, and the possibility of a future. Gaza has the world's highest number of child amputees, most of them under twelve.

West Bank Christian communities: VPP serves the ancient Christian communities of Bethlehem, Beit Sahour, Taybeh, and Birzeit — providing humanitarian aid, amplifying their voices to the international community, and advocating for their religious freedom and right to remain on the land their families have called home for two thousand years.

VPP's commitment in Gaza and the West Bank is not contingent on a ceasefire or a political solution. The need exists now. The people are there now. VPP will continue to deliver food, expand the prosthetics program, and stand with the West Bank's Christian communities for as long as it takes.
